On May 28th (yup, the following report is waaay late!), the I Heart Artz workshop at Central Neighbourhood House wrapped up its 3 stellar programs – Sneaker Painting w. Carlos Delgado; Comix & Cartooning w. Paul Byron, and Hip Hop w. Jae Lejit -in a final exhibition, with talks and performances from participants as well as our guest starring artists!
And of course…BBQ.
Each 4-week workshop provided youth local to the communities of Regent Park, Moss Park, and St. James Town with unique experiences and encouraged the expression of imagination in these various art forms. A captived audience checked out the colourful shoes, superheroic doodles, and funky beats that our youth made, while getting a drawing demonstrations from Carlos, caricatures of the crowd by Paul, and a rendition one of Jae’s newest rhymes, Remember Me.
I Heart Artz was CNH’s first collaboration with the Toronto Arts Council, and we are grateful to them and our officer for the ‘Community Arts’ grant, Andrew Suri, for their kind assistance in making our project a reality.
I would also be remiss without giving a shout out to Makeeba Foster and Raymond Koyo, Child and Youth Workers who helped us corral many of the youngsters that participated, along with Pam Gawn, Manager of Community Programs and Engagement at CNH, stalwart supporter of our many arts initiatives, and all-around great pal.
