Our final workshop in the I Heart Artz series was offered by none other than rising hip hop star and community artist, Jae Lejit. The amazing impact of Jae’s work with youth has been undeniable, featuring in major media such as the Globe and Mail, City TV, and the Toronto Star, and recognized by many key figures and organizations. While committed to speak the truth through his music, above all Jae’s message is one of overwhelming positivity, which our participants Pierre and Akua soon found out as Jae encouraged each of them to write original songs rooted in their own life experiences.
Over the 4 weeks, Jae introduced the two to the mystical philosophy behind his own view of hip hop – namely, the 5 elements: fire, earth, water, air, and knowledge, each with their own inner meaning. With this framework in mind, Pierre and Akua got to work finding the music and lyrics that would help give their songs shape.
For the last week in the workshop, Jae and Flemo City Media very kindly offered us some studio time, and our participants had a unique trip here learning what recording a hip hop song is all about.
A big shout out to Jae for bringing his talent to CNH, and also to Raymond Koyo, Child and Youth Worker, who helped to facilitate our weekly needs.
